Research Requirement:

As an I/O professional, you may decide you want to make a difference about specific issues in your life or career. In fact, you might decide to work for an organization that supports your beliefs and causes or builds on your passions in life. In such a role, you will need to apply strategies and principles of cognition in support of your life or career goals. This requires self-motivation, which impacts both human behavior and emotion. Have you considered the role of your expectations, attributions, or inferences on such self-motivation? What differentiates individuals who practice such self-motivation compared to others who do not?  Read “Case Study 11.1: Toxic Tires“ found in this week’s learning activities.   Case Synopsis and Analysis  Tire pollution is emerging as an important environmental and public health issue. Tire particles are released during driving that contain microplastics made of toxic chemicals and heavy metals. These particles contribute to pollution in the air and ocean and have been detected in edible plants and human urine. Such contaminants threaten marine life as well as other food and water sources. Tire producers have warned that removing certain chemicals could compromise safety and durability, so they have been researching alternative tire formulations to reduce emissions. Consumers can also help by driving less aggressively and buying higher-quality tires that last longer. Other efforts to address this issue include lawsuits and regulatory proposals for policy changes. The politics of this issue impacts not only environmental advocates but also those employed by the automotive and tire industries and the public health of millions of people. Self-motivation and emotion impact those on all sides of this issue.  Imagine you are an I/O psychologist consultant serving organizations that protect the environment and public health, such as Earthjustice, the Environmental Defense Fund, or the Natural Resources Defense Council. You are concerned about the issue of tire pollution and feel strongly that your consultancy should prioritize lobbying efforts to regulate toxic tire chemicals and promote safer alternatives. Prepare a 750- to 1,050-word proposal for the partners in your consultancy addressing your concern. Include the following:   Describe 3 key issues you believe are faced by the industry that you are consulting for, but are not currently addressed in case study 11.1, in relation to tire pollution and its impact on the environment.  These issues should not relate to the strategies of cognition that you are discussing later in the assignment. It would be good to see you support this area with research. Present your personal position regarding your identified issues, including your self-motivation that led you to your passion. Using the first person (I/me) is acceptable in this area of the assignment. Bringing in information from the text is a great way to support your points here. Explain specific strategies of cognition that you would apply to these issues from the perspective of your own self-motivation, human behavior, and emotions toward them. (For this, review information in chapter 2 of the book, looking at things like cognitive biases and moral motivation. Consider topics such as social norms and cognitive dissonance here.) Research would be great to see here. Include a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed journal articles addressing the differences between self-motivated and non-self-motivated individuals as well as strategies and/or principles of cognition relating to human behavior and emotion. The journal articles should be used to support the information throughout your entire assignment. A great place to use them would be in the strategies of cognition portion of the assignment. Note that the articles should not just be listed or discussed at the end of the assignment.  They need to be worked in throughout the proposal. Format your proposal according to APA guidelines, making sure to cite and reference your sources. The assignment should also include a title and reference page, and be double-spaced. It should also include a brief introduction and conclusion. Submit your assignment as a word document. Late work policy reminder: Just a reminder that while late work is accepted, it does lose points per day (up to a total of 10%), and nothing is accepted after 4 days. Please keep the following in mind for the assignments: While I am more than happy to look over a rough draft, resubmissions are not allowed once the assignment has been graded and returned to you.  If you provide a link to an assignment, that will not be graded. The assignment must be submitted in the proper format. If the assignment has too high of a SafeAssign match, a grade of 0 will be assigned. Please make sure to review the SafeAssign results for your assignments. Word counts for the assignment do not include references, citations or assignment instructions. All assignments are set to allow unlimited attempts. This means you can resubmit your work as many times as you like before the due date. The University of Phoenix has implemented this to give you the flexibility to make changes and improvements before the deadline. Please note: Only your last submission will be graded. Prior submissions will not be considered. Assignments submitted after the due date will incur a late credit deduction and are only taken 4 days late. You cannot resubmit assignments once the due date has passed or after grades/feedback have been posted. Here is a link to a video about how to find peer-reviewed journal articles.
