Theory selection chosen: Motivational interviewing  Group theory involves unique principles. While some may overlap with theories that inform approaches to individual counseling such as empathy, other principles such as group cohesiveness are clearly specific to group modalities. Group theory should be familiar to you from previous coursework. Week 2 will review those basic concepts and extend them to help you explore how they apply to the treatment of addiction and compulsive behavior. This week will challenge you to begin the same process of identifying the theories that resonate with your own style as you build your model for group leadership for the treatment of substance-related and addictive behaviors. In this course, we are focusing on three commonly used theories in group treatment of addictions: cognitive behavioral theory, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused theory. Your model will need to address one of these theories used in group treatment of addictions. Submit the theory selection portion of your final project (2–3 pages, plus title page and references). In this section, you review the literature in group counseling and addictions counseling that will influence how you create your personal model for group leadership. Refer to the Theory Selection rubric and the Course Project overview to ensure that you meet all of the project requirements and evaluation criteria Analyze literature in group and addictions counseling.  45 to >38.25 pts DISTINGUISHED Analyzes literature in group and addictions counseling in a detailed manner, including credible evidence from multiple scholarly sources. 38.25 to >31.5 pts PROFICIENT Analyzes literature in group and addictions counseling. 31.5 to >0 pts BASIC Addresses literature in group and addictions counseling, but includes a few credible, scholarly sources and lacks adequate detail. 0 pts NON_PERFORMANCE Does not analyze literature in group and addictions counseling.   / 45 pts Explain how theories influence personal approach.  45 to >38.25 pts DISTINGUISHED Explains how theories influence personal approach and provides examples that illustrate the influences. 38.25 to >31.5 pts PROFICIENT Explains how theories influence personal approach. 31.5 to >0 pts BASIC Explains how theories influence personal approach in a vague or general way. 0 pts NON_PERFORMANCE Does not explain how theories influence personal approach.   / 45 pts Address how the tenets of the selected theory relate to the group treatment of addictive behaviors.  45 to >38.25 pts DISTINGUISHED Addresses how the tenets of the selected theory relate to the group treatment of addictive behavior with an insightful synthesis of information. 38.25 to >31.5 pts PROFICIENT Addresses how the tenets of the selected theory relate to the group treatment of addictive behaviors. 31.5 to >0 pts BASIC Addresses how the tenets of the selected theory relate to the group treatment of addictive behaviors but exhibits a narrow perspective of the theory. 0 pts NON_PERFORMANCE Does not address how the tenets of the selected theory relate to the group treatment of addictive behaviors.   / 45 pts Communicate effectively through the consistent use of APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of a counseling professional.  15 to >12.75 pts DISTINGUISHED Communicates effectively through the consistent use of APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of a counseling professional, meeting professional publication standards. 12.75 to >10.5 pts PROFICIENT Communicates effectively through the consistent use of APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of a counseling professional. 10.5 to >0 pts BASIC Communicates through the use of APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of a counseling professional, with frequent, minor errors. 0 pts NON_PERFORMANCE Does not communicate effectively through the consistent use of APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of a counseling professional.
