Being able to present yourself in an open, caring, and professional manner helps with building rapport and influences your clients’ willingness to share their experiences. You also must be skilled at interacting with clients who are different from you. Interviewing skills are also very important, as you have seen, and social workers must be mindful of how to conduct an interview in a culturally competent and culturally sensitive manner. In this Assignment, you have an opportunity to practice your engagement and assessment skills. You conduct an interview with an individual from a different culture than your own to learn their perspective about culture and gender. Then, record the PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura. Your video should be 4–5 minutes. Submit a recorded PowerPoint (PPT) presentation about your interview with a person from a different culture than your own. Your presentation should include 8–10 slides and should be 4–5 minutes in recorded length. She is engaged to be married. She is a Christian and her political beliefs is a Republican. HAVE YOU EVER LIVED OR VISITED OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES? IF SO, WHERE? DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE. She has visited four places outside of the United States. The Four places she visited was Canada, Bahamas, Mexico and Panama.She visited panama with her ex boyfriend, so he could visit his family. Panama Stood out the most because she stated she was in shock; due to the way the area looked she visited. The community was low income and on the poor side. She went into a home where it was made of cement but had no windows with glass or any doors in the home. She also stated that all the beds were on the floor with no railings or bed frames. When comparing to the United States the conditions were bad. CONTINUE D She stated she had a good and bad experience because of the language barrier. Majority of the population spoke Spanish and she did not understand everything they were saying. When she went into the city; the tourist area some people did speak English; but very mildly. WHAT DO YOU IDENTIFY AS YOUR CULTURE? She Identifies as a Caucasian but is part German. She does not identify with her German side because her great grandmother would not speak about it. Her Great grandmother grew up in Germany and moved over to the states as a refugee and married a German man who was a soldier who went MIA. Once her husband was considered dead, she married an American to become a U. S. Citizen with forged documents. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUES AND BELIEFS OF YOUR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY? They are very family oriented. They believe in spending all holidays together as a family. They believe in being honesty, being trustworthy, and being respectful to everyone. She grew up in a Christian household. She went to Christian schools her entire childhood until college. They believed in going to small community church’s where everyone was supportive and there for one another. WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT EVENTS, TRADITIONS, CELEBRATIONS, AND PRACTICES IN YOUR FAMILY OR COMMUNITY? She stated they do not have any practices. Important events; as a family they would get together for Christmas and spend the first apart of the day with mom's family and in the evening would transition to dad's family. This would be the only time of a family separation. On Thanksgiving, Easter, graduations and birthdays the family would not separate both families would come together as one. HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY OR COMMUNITY DEFINE GENDER ROLES? Growing up as a child in her home; the fathers were the income providers, and they paid all the bills. The wives was considered the homemakers. They cooked, cleaned and took care of the kids; but could work if wanted to. Her mom would make money on the side from sewing and selling at flea markets. Any money that was made that day she was able to keep for herself. In her current relationship things are different. Her and her fiancé splits everything down the middle. Cleaning, cooking, working and bills is all 50/50. HOW WELL DO YOU FIT WITHIN YOUR FAMILY OR COMMUNITY BASED ON THESE OTHER IDENTITIES YOU HOLD? She believes she fit in well with her family. They all believe in the same faith as well as they believe in getting together on holidays and staying a close-knit family. Her biggest event is moving to Arizona recently with her fiancé as her and her family was never no more than five minutes apart. It was a big adjustment for the whole family. HOW DO YOU THINK OTHERS OUTSIDE YOUR COMMUNITY VIEW YOUR CULTURE? She believes right now everyone views her culture as racist due to the most recent election; and she does not want to be viewed that way. She does Identify as a republican, but she understand how African Americans and other cultures feel right now in this time. She stated she knows what it feels like to be judged and discriminated against as she has endured that as a young girl. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED PREJUDICE OR DISCRIMINATION? PLEASE DESCRIBE. Yes, when she was in the 4th grade, she had an African American teacher who did not like Caucasian kids. She would make her pull her desk to the front of the class, she would not help her with any of her assignments and any extra curricular activities she would not let her participate. Multiple parents did complain about the teacher and their kids were pulled from the class as well as Hayley. She stated it made her upset because she knew she didn’t do anything wrong, but she did not understand why the teacher were treating Caucasian kids that way.  CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AT THE: MICRO LEVEL MEZZO LEVEL MACRO LEVEL Her and her family would fall under the Micro and Mezzo Level. Micro I believe because you work within your induvial family or work with an individual client. They are a close-knit family and they always talked everything with one another. They didn’t have many secrets. Mezzo level because it is group involvement. Within the small community they lived-in everyone knew everyone; and everyone was supportive of one another through good and bad times. DESCRIBE YOUR REACTION TO THIS ACTIVITY. In doing this project it made me very nervous, but I also enjoyed speaking with someone of a different culture. Speaking with someone from a different culture makes you aware that you must be culturally competent and trained to be able to do this job correctly as a professional Social worker. REFLECT ON THESE REACTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU BELIEVE YOU MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS. I believe I experienced these reactions, because even though we are of different culture many things are alike. For instance, the family bondage, the father being the head of the household unless you were a single parent, and just the beliefs and values were so in tuned to my family. DESCRIBE WHAT YOU LEARNED AND EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAN APPLY WHAT YOU LEARNED TO THE SOCIAL WORK PROFESSION. I Learned no matter what background, culture, poverty level you grew up in we are alike in someway. We all strive to make a difference whether you had the right family support growing up or you didn’t have any family at all. Being able to see what lifestyle someone was brought up in compared to yours and end up with the same goals and dreams is inspirational. As a Social Worker I will be self-aware, I will become culturally competent and learn to come into any situation with no opinion on anyone before getting to know them.
