Megan1.pdf Dr. K & class, Moving around a lot can bring to light opportunities to get involved in different states and communities of which we get stationed in the service. I am currently on Cape Cod, MA. There is a community known as the Cape Cod Young Professionals (CCYP) that connects the workforce and leadership of the Cape in efforts to promote civic engagement. The CCYP maintains different committees that individuals can join to get involved. I plan on reaching out to join the Leadership and Professional Advancement committee to gain resources to enhance my professional skill set. The CCYP also has a committee for civic and community engagement. The next meeting is scheduled for January 25 for an after hours connection. I look forward to attending and getting more involved. -Megan Keith3.pdf After reviewing this week’s discussion post topic, I found that attending a meeting of a non-profit or show public service three days before this post was due was not going to happen. So I decided to research non-profit organizations/civic clubs in my area, specifically Moore County, North Carolina. This website from the Moore County Chamber of Commerce showed 45 of these groups in my county alone. There are educational groups, home builders’ association, Habitat for Humanity, creative arts groups, camps, and retreat groups. These groups on the website have links to their websites to get more information on what they do, how to support these groups, meeting times, and notes/videos from previous meetings for later review. Some groups I have been a part of over the years are Habitat for Humanity and the Fisher House. Fisher House is a non-profit organization that supports military members and their family on military bases, mainly near military hospitals. These facilities provide a place for military members to stay for free or if they wish to donate they can. I personally used this facility back in 2008 when I went to get my LASIK eye surgery done. My wife and I were able to stay at this facility at no charge thanks to donations through the Combine Federal Campaign (CFC). In addition to the Fisher House, I have spent several Saturday afternoons over the years helping Habitat for Humanity. This organization helps to provide homes for people/families in need either my renovation or building the home from the ground up. Most of the time when I volunteered we just did demolition and later came back to help install cabinets or do landscaping. I hope everyone has a great last week of class and good luck with the rest of your program! Keith Wilson Cohen.pdf Good afternoon Class, I wrote a detailed letter to Governor Gavin Newsom on why it is dangerous to allow sanctuary cities to continue in California. Sanctuary cities can pose a threat to our national security. Here is the letter that I wrote: Dear Governor Gavin Newsom, I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Benjamin Cohen, and I am writing to voice my concerns regarding the policy of sanctuary cities in California. While I appreciate the state's pledge to providing a safe haven for immigrants, I believe there are possible risks linked with this policy that warrant careful consideration. I am mainly concerned about the likelihood that sanctuary cities could accidentally create an atmosphere that may be exploited by entities with malevolent intent, including those who may seek to participate in terrorist activities. The openness of sanctuary cities may pose challenges for law enforcement to methodically vet and monitor individuals entering or residing in these areas. I understand the position of nurturing inclusivity and providing support to those seeking refuge, but it is vital to strike a balance between humanitarian efforts and national security. I believe it is important to have thorough screening processes and cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. I would appreciate it if you could review and strengthen the policies related to sanctuary cities to address these concerns. Enhancing collaboration between law enforcement agencies, implementing more robust vetting processes, or exploring alternative approaches that balance compassion with security may be involved. I am cognizant of the challenges you face as governor, and I am thankful for your dedication to the well-being of California's citizens. I hold the belief that a thorough examination of the sanctuary city policies can enhance the overall safety and security of our state. Thank you for your time and consideration. I am eager to hear about any measures or considerations you may take to address these concerns. Sincerely, Benjamin Cohen
