FLAAssignmentCdetails050224.docx FLA Assignment C details Assessment- Critical Review of a Workplace Conflict and Resolution Assessment type; Critical review Word limit/length; 3000 Words (+500, including in-text citations, reference list, any tables/figures and appendices) Assessment overview Students will write in an academic manner, drawing from the literature, on a real-life workplace conflict. This exercise is intended to build skills in critical evaluation including the ability to consider team climate and others’ perspectives when dealing with conflict as well as increasing students’ understanding of the importance of evidence to managing interpersonal workplace relations. Learning outcomes This assessment task is aligned to the following learning outcomes: · Critically evaluate the internal and external factors affecting the ways in which healthcare professional interact with each other and the effect this has on client safety. · Plan and implement strategies to foster a team climate, manage boundaries and resolve conflict. · Understand the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviour and compare concepts, theories and models of social and emotional intelligence. · Critically evaluate the emotions and behaviours of self and others to enable learning from experience. Assessment Details and Instructions Task Description Step 1: Choose any ongoing conflict (i.e., not a one-off instance of conflict) in your workplace that has been challenging either for you or for someone else (or both). You should be directly involved in the conflict and/or have some responsibility for resolving it. Note that ‘conflict’ is used in its broadest form here; this does not need to be an overt or formal conflict. The conflict you choose may be related to the incident you discussed in FLA Assignment B and you may re-use information where appropriate. The conflict can be with any partner including supervisors, peers/colleagues, students, management, and even patients/health service consumers. -Describe the context including a brief account of any background information necessary for the reader to understand the setting, the issues, and the stakeholders (please do not use real names but rather pseudonyms) that lead to the development of the context. Step 2: Write an analytical case study of the situation drawing on the content and literature you have encountered in this SEC Reading 1 -14. The case analysis should be divided into 3 sections: Antecedents to the conflict, Implications of the conflict, and Resolution of the conflict. Antecedents Internal and External Factors -Identify internal factors for all parties including emotions and what may be underlying those (as you did for yourself in FLA Assignment B) -Identify external factors (including pressures, changes or restrictions arising from policy, culture, the organization, or other entities). -Identify any other underlying factors that led to the development of the conflict. Implications -Consider the implications of the conflict for all stakeholders (e.g., in terms of client/patient safety, team/organizational climate etc.) Resolution -If the situation has been resolved, evaluate the resolution. Was it an example of best practice in terms of social and emotional competence? If yes, why? If no, why not? -If the situation has not been resolved, try to propose a solution and include an evaluation of your own solution. Would that be an example of best practice in terms of social and emotional competence? If yes, why? If no, why not? You should draw on the (SEC Reading materials) literature related to conflict resolution, teamwork, emotional and/or cultural intelligence, self-reflection, and feedback processes where appropriate/relevant throughout to strengthen your analysis. The best case-studies will balance an objective account of the situation with applied principles from the, readings, and your own research extending the topic. Using information from workplace The assignments are designed to provide an opportunity to work with real workplace events to enhance the maximum relevance and possibility of translation of the work to practice. However, if there is no possibility of relating the assignments to the workplace, please describe the work in general terms and/or consider the case hypothetically What is included in the word count It is an important academic and practical skill to be able to communicate succinctly. It is expected that students will adhere to the word limits and not exceed the prescribed limit including in-text citations and the reference list. 7
