ANTH350Week1Rescources.docx ANTH350 Week 1 Rescources Week 1 Introduction to Medical Anthropology Anthropology is the study of human beings and their ancestors. It is concerned with the study of the whole of human life—in the past, present, and future. It offers a unique cross-cultural perspective through the comparison of the customs of one society with those of others. Anthropology looks at both society and culture. Society is organized life in groups—a feature that humans share with other species. Cultures, on the other hand, are traditions and customs that are transmitted through learning (enculturation) that determines the behaviors and ideologies of the people exposed to them (such as morals and codes of ethics). Culture is not biological. Rather it is social. However, the ability to use culture rests in human biology (the ability to learn and think symbolically and to adapt to environmental changes). This course focuses specifically on medical anthropology - an applied subfield that looks at the intersection between culture and health. Medical anthropologists conduct cross-cultural studies of health and illness and the cultural behaviors related to them. Areas of focus may include health-care systems, including Western medicine, and the relationships between patients and healers in many different settings. They also act as liaisons between patients and health care providers to ensure that health care is delivered in culturally competent ways.
